If you've ever experienced tight shoulders, a racing mind, and the feeling of being stretched thin between deadlines, family, and everything else happening in the world, this article is for you. There is also a simple practice at the end that you can try for yourself.
I believe we've all been there. I certainly have, especially during my 'burnout' phases.
That was until I discovered a simple, research-backed way to transition from that contracted feeling to a sense of centeredness or even spaciousness quite quickly (in just a few minutes).
Don't get me wrong; I still have my moments, but now I can navigate these intense feelings much faster than before. I can choose not to get stuck in them anymore. This ability gives me an emotional freedom that I am truly grateful for.
It can feel almost magical, and it's called Heart Coherence. It has been researched for over 30 years by the HeartMath Institute and, in my opinion, should be far more popular than it currently is.
Simply put, Heart Coherence helps the body and mind shift from stress to balance.

What is Heart Coherence?
Heart Coherence is a measurable state where your heart, brain, and nervous system all come into sync. It’s like a team working together instead of pulling in different directions.
When you’re in a coherent state, you might feel:
Grounded yet energised
Calm but alert
Clear-minded and more focused, rather than scattered or foggy
With practice, you can learn to access this state anytime: in traffic, before a difficult conversation, or when life starts to feel overwhelming.
The Heart-Brain Connection
One surprising fact I often share with my clients is that your heart has what researchers sometimes call its own its own "little brain".
An intrinsic nervous system made up of around 40,000 neurons. Yes, 40,000 neurons live in your heart!
This means it literally has its own little brain that can learn and remember! It even sends more signals to the brain than the brain sends to the heart.
When your heart rhythm becomes more coherent, it can help your whole system settle, so you may feel calmer, clearer, and less caught up in stress.

Heart Coherence is Backed by Research
The HeartMath Institute has studied this heart-brain connection since 1991. They have developed scientifically validated tools and technologies to improve emotional balance, health, and performance.
Their methods have been used by organisations such as NASA, Stanford, health professionals, and Olympic teams to enhance their performance and resilience.
In studies with over 14,000 participants, the HeartMath Institute found that people practising heart coherence experienced:
Anxiety down by 67%
Fatigue decreased by 53%
Anger diminished by 67%
Calmness increased by 49%
Emotional vitality up by 27%
Sleep quality improved by 36%
Significant decreases in blood pressure (comparable to those seen in medication trials)
If you’re curious to experience these benefits yourself, Heart Coherence is one of the powerful techniques I use in sessions with clients here in Sydney and online.
And what's really amazing about this is that practicing even just 5 minutes a day makes a measurable difference.

What You Could Experience in Heart Coherence Sessions
More than the research, what truly matters is how it feels in real life.
Here’s what one of the beautiful women I've supported shared:
"Claudia has helped me navigate a tricky relationship situation. We did both EFT and heart math [heart coherence] sessions. I felt so much clearer straight away, was able to reconcile my emotions and rational thinking, and connect to my heart that knew all the answers. My nervous system felt calm for weeks despite the circumstances." — Natalia S.

A Powerful Tool for Nervous System Regulation
Heart Coherence is a really useful tool you can return to again and again when you're navigating stress, burnout, health challenges, relationship changes, emotional overload, or when you simply want to feel more balanced.
With stress-related health issues estimated to cost Australia between $13 and $17 billion per year, learning to regulate your nervous system isn't just a luxury. It's becoming essential for our health, relationships, careers, and overall quality of life.
When I guide clients through Heart Coherence, I sometimes use biofeedback technology so they can see their nervous system shifting in real time.

Your first step to Heart Coherence: Heart Focused Breathing
I invite you to try the first step to get into Heart Coherence now.
Sit in a comfortable position. You're welcome to close your eyes, or keep them open. If you decide to keep them open, simply lower your gaze to a specific spot on the ground in front of you. Gently roll your shoulders, soften your jaw and tummy, and feel your feet touching the ground.
Let's start:
1) If it feels comfortable, place one hand on your heart. Feel the warmth or the gentle pressure of your hand on your skin. 2) Bring your focus to your heart or chest area.
3) Imagine your breath flowing in and out of your heart area.
4) Breathe a little deeper and slower than usual, in a rhythm that's comfortable to you. Easy and flowy.
Stay with this practice for about 5 minutes and notice how your mind and nervous system feel afterwards. If sensations or emotions come up, that's completely ok. See if you can notice them with curiosity and softness. If your mind wanders, gently come back to the feeling of your breath flowing in and out of your heart.
Be gentle with yourself and allow yourself to drop into your heart area.
By doing this practice, you're gently supporting your nervous system and building your resilience muscle.
Congratulations on taking your first step in connecting with the energy and intelligence of your heart!
Note: sometimes, sensations or emotions can feel a bit too loud, overwhelming, or numb. If that happens, you don't need to push through the practice. You can pause, open your eyes, look around the room, and feel your feet on the ground. When sensations or emotions come up, it may be your body’s way of bringing something to your attention, something that might need to be noticed, supported, or acknowledged. If you'd like extra support, you may want to work with a Heart Coherence practitioner to support and guide you through the process.
